Prerequisites

Complete GM-01 and GM-04. You should already have:

  • A PC that can run your game and LIVE Studio at once without exact spec guesswork — GM-06 covers single-PC performance
  • A working microphone and a rough sense of your game's audio
  • Willingness to accept that LIVE Studio is a separate, simpler tool with a real ceiling — not OBS with a different skin

Version note: TikTok LIVE Studio is documented by TikTok's help center as supporting Windows and macOS (as of TikTok help, March 2026). Menu names and capture options change between builds. Treat every screenshot here as subject to periodic review — confirm current wording in your installed version.

Main Lesson

What LIVE Studio is (and is not)

LIVE Studio is TikTok's own desktop streaming app: it captures your game/screen, camera, and audio, builds scenes, and sends the stream to your LIVE session — no stream key or third-party software required. It is built for speed, not deep filter chains or a plugin ecosystem — a smaller, guided version of what OBS offers.

Capture sources for gaming

  • Game/window capture — a specific game or window; usually cleanest since it tracks the game even with other windows open
  • Screen/display capture — your entire screen; exposes notifications, other apps, private tabs — treat as a privacy risk, not a convenience
  • Camera source — your webcam feed, sized as a facecam layer
  • Capture card source — per TikTok's help documentation, a connected capture card can be a video source, how console gameplay reaches LIVE Studio without OBS (full routing in GM-08)

Use the narrowest capture that shows exactly what viewers should see. Prefer game/window capture unless exclusive fullscreen blocks it — then borderless windowed mode (set in the game) usually restores clean capture.

Camera, including OBS Virtual Camera as a source

Add your webcam sized so it does not cover critical UI. If you build a richer program in OBS but still want to stream through LIVE Studio, LIVE Studio can accept OBS Virtual Camera as a camera-source input, selected like a physical webcam. This is a legitimate production path, not a workaround — GM-07 is the full build, including the audio traps it creates. Do not attempt full Virtual Camera routing from this lesson alone.

Microphone and audio devices

LIVE Studio expects explicit device selection — mic input, and separately, system/application audio:

  • Mic input — your actual microphone, not a generic default that silently changes with a new headphone connection
  • System/application audio — game sound and other app audio; selecting one application can mute other sounds depending on the build
  • Double-audio risk — mic and desktop/system audio both capturing the same sound produces an echo. Remove the duplicate path — do not add filters on top of it

Test mic and system audio with a private clip before ever going LIVE. Meters moving is not proof viewers can hear you.

Scenes, layout, and vertical gaming

Build at least two scenes: a main gameplay scene (capture + facecam + minimal overlay) and a talk/break scene (camera-forward, for loading screens and downtime) so a frozen game frame is never your only option. TikTok LIVE is vertical-first — design for 9:16 from the start, and leave room top and bottom for TikTok's own chat/UI overlay so your facecam and key game info are not hidden.

Alerts and chat inside a gaming layout

Alerts and chat both want screen space gaming layouts do not have much of. Keep alert boxes small, time-boxed, and away from minimaps or objective trackers. Chat should be visible enough to reference on purpose (GM-03) but should not dominate the vertical frame — the game is why people are watching.

Troubleshooting inside LIVE Studio

  • Black or frozen capture — reselect the game/window source; games often need reselection after relaunch or a fullscreen switch
  • No audio despite correct selection — an OS update may have changed the default device; reselect explicitly
  • Capture lags behind gameplay — check background app load before blaming LIVE Studio
  • Virtual Camera not detected — confirm it started *before* opening LIVE Studio's source list; GM-07 has the full recovery sequence

Where LIVE Studio stops and OBS begins

Write this plainly on your checklist: no deep filter chains (limited or no plugin-style audio/VST or color/chroma tooling), fewer capture-source types and less per-source control, no Advanced Audio Properties-style mixing depth, limited scene-transition and hotkey customization vs OBS's Studio Mode, and no plugin ecosystem.

There is no feature parity between LIVE Studio and OBS. That is the honest boundary that tells you when it is time to move to GM-06.

Example 1 — Solo shooter player, no stream key yet. Game/window capture + small facecam bottom-right + vertical layout with chat above the minimap. Mic explicitly selected; system audio limited to the game so Discord does not bleed in.

Example 2 — Cozy/simulation streamer. Facecam-forward talk scene for menu time, swapped to a game+facecam split during play. Alerts kept small and timed to natural pauses.

Example 3 — OBS Virtual Camera into LIVE Studio. Visual program built in OBS; Virtual Camera started and selected as the camera source; audio routed separately via LIVE Studio's own device selection, documented as such — not described as running OBS directly.
